I have been reading about photographers going back and forth about newborn safety for a long time now.  Some recent things have prompted me to post this and it is just my personal opinion, so take it with a grain of salt.

Since I have started doing newborn photography almost 2 years ago, safety has been my number one priority.  I would never, ever, in a million years, put a newborn (or any client) in a situation I didn’t think was safe.  It breaks my heart (even makes me a little mad) that anyone would ever think that I wasn’t a safe photographer or put baby’s safety first.

It took me a long time to even try to do certain newborn poses, because I didn’t know how to do them with safety first.  I don’t work with an assistant, but I do count on parents to help assist/spot in certain poses.  When I put babies in baskets, they are weighted with more weight than the baby, the parents spot when I do the head in the hands pose.  The every few times I have tried a hanging baby pose, mom or dad is holding the baby.  With the help of photoshop and clever camera positioning you wouldn’t know what was going on behind the scenes.

I value what I do and the people I work with.  I wouldn’t put a baby or anyone else in harms way just to get the shot.  As a client remember, if you aren’t comfortable with something your photographer is doing to speak up!  As a photographer, if you are not 100% certain how to obtain a pose as safe as possible, don’t do it!

How cute is this guy?!  He is beyond adorable, cute, and wonderful!  E. is 2 weeks old and my longest newborn client to date, 22 inches!  One adorable thing about E. is that he keeps his pinkie fingers out and up.  It was so funny, because no matter how asleep he was, if I didn’t tuck his fingers they went straight out.  I LOVE my job!

Thank you so much to his wonderful mom for brining him out to Danville!

I am so excited that almost 2 years of working as a photographer that I am finding my direction as an artist and a photographer.  I adore newborn photography and as it turns out I LOVE maternity photography.  I was very excited to add Laura to my expecting moms list and she is just stunning as a mother to be!  P.S. Her husband is crazy in love with her, and it just melted my heart.
